International professional meeting at the Hungarian Academy of Justice on the European Arrest Warrant

Since January 2018, the National Office for the Judiciary has been a partner in the "InAbsentiEAW" project launched by the University of Maastricht and supported by the European Commission. The goal of the project is to provide a comprehensive picture about the EU level practice of enforcing European Arrest Warrants that were issued to enforce decisions made in the defendant's absence.
The most recent meeting of experts working on the project took place between 26 and 29 August 2019 at the Hungarian Academy of Justice, with participants from the Netherlands, Belgium, Ireland and Poland. This time, the topic of the meeting was the finalization of the professional materials of more than one and a half years of research and the preparation of the closing conference in Maastricht in October. As a result of the project, a handbook will be published comparing the laws of member states on absentee cases, also presenting the case law of the European Court of Justice and the European Court of Human Rights, which will help in issuing and enforcing European Arrest Warrants issued to enforce a decision. The handbook will be available for Hungarian judges from late autumn.
The participants also had the opportunity to exchange experiences with international judges at the Budapest-Capital Regional Court and to attend to an extradition meeting.
