Statistical data on defendants of closed criminal cases
The National Office for the Judiciary collects and then processes data regarding juvenile or adult defendants who were convicted under Government decree 388/2017 (XII. 13.) on the mandatory data service for the National Statistical Data Collection Program. The collected data are not only used for domestic research but to provide information in case of international inquiries as well. The statistics also provide an overview of the main social, sociological, and criminal indicators regarding defendants and the issued punishments.
In recent years, the National Office for the Judiciary has made multiple improvements and will continue to improve its IT systems to make data even more accurate and comprehensive. To make the data available, the system introduced in 2017 allows all the information collected on data forms to be extracted, aggregated and made available to external users.
The implementation of the new system was accompanied by the revision of previous data as well. On the webpage, previously published summary charts up until 2016 remain available under the "Revízió előtti adatok" (Pre-revision data) icon. Due to the changes in the structure of data gathering, there may, of course, be some differences compared to post-revision data. (For example, while in the 2014 summary charts only data regarding the most severe crimes were included, the charts after the revision fully include all crimes that each defendant has been charged with).
The uploaded statistical charts and analyses are only available in Hungarian!
Pre-revision data:
Contains criminologically, socially and sociologically relevant data regarding the defendants and the imposed punishments between 2012 and 2014, broken down by the most severe crime committed.
From 2015 the previously quite sizable excel tables were supplanted by short, infographical summaries, which also contain the most important data regarding the defendant, the crime, and the imposed punishment. Additionally, the interactive Excel table is searchable by the number of defendants, and by their distribution according to the most serious crimes.
Post-revision data:
The (shortened) databases were compiled following the most frequent inquiries received by the National Office for the Judiciary and to avoid the identification of defendants. Can be found under the "Revíziót követő adatok" (Post-revision data) icon dating back to 2013.
A guide containing information on the structure and use of the databases, which helps to gather data from them can be found under the "Segédfájlok" (Useful materials) icon. For the processing of data, we recommend professional statistics software (e.g. SPSS), however, without them, the data can be processed using any popular spreadsheet software (e.g. Excel).
