About the courts
In the first three months of 2019, the number of cases finished by the courts was invariably higher than the number of cases launched in the courts.
More and more cases are filed under the rules of the new Code of Civil Procedure. While in the first quarter of 2018 only 18,000, in the first three months of 2019 almost twice as many, 35,500 cases have been launched under the new Code of Civil Procedure. Thus, the proportion of cases under the new CCP has risen from 55.3% to nearly 90%.
In the first quarter of 2019, the soundness of criminal judgments has further increased in the district courts, where 75.1% of all criminal cases were finished. 78.8% of the judgments have become final already at first instance.
On May 9, 2019, the General Assembly of the European Association of Judges (EAJ) in Copenhagen adopted a report condemning the Hungarian jurisdiction. The National Office for the Judiciary (NOJ) turned to the President of the EAJ because of the false allegations, factual and legal errors included in the report.
The National Office for the Judiciary (NOJ) is hosting a Conference celebrating the 15th anniversary of Hungary’s accession to the European Union on 27 May 2019, where dr. The Regional Court of Appeal of Szeged has appointed the concrete days of the second instance hearing in the criminal case (so-called case of „Death-Truck of Parndorf”) that started because of homicide and other criminal actions against L. S. and his 13 fellow defendants.

District courts reduced the number of cases pending for more than two years from 10,110 in 2010 to 5,772, and the first-instance councils of regional courts managed to reduce 3,635 cases in 2010 to 1,771 by the end of 2018.
Judges working in the field of administrative and labour law had to declare until 30 April 2019 whether they want to continue their work at administrative courts to be established on 1 January 2020, or to remain within the ordinary court system.
